Spanish Wikipedia
Long entries with unfamiliar vocabulary are easier to follow when a voice sets the pace and the current sentence is highlighted. Lullula remembers where you stopped.
Shadowing for learners
Slow the narrator toward 0.5x, repeat each sentence as it's highlighted, then skip back and try it again. Speed it up as you get comfortable.
Heritage speakers
If you grew up hearing Spanish but read it slowly, hearing the text while you follow the highlighted sentence connects the Spanish you know by ear to the words on the page.
What it can't do (yet)
Lullula reads text. A few limits are worth knowing before you install.
Mixed-language pages
Lullula picks one narrator per page from the page's language. A Spanish article with a few English quotes is read by the Spanish narrator throughout, and a mostly-English page with some Spanish in it gets the English narrator. It doesn't switch voices mid-page.
Scanned PDFs
A PDF that is only a picture of a page — a scanned book, a photographed handout — has no text layer, so there is nothing to read. Text-based PDFs work; image-only scans don't.
DRM-protected books
E-books bought with copy protection, which includes most Kindle and store purchases, can't be opened. DRM-free EPUBs read fine, with the same highlighting and speed control as a web page.
Questions, answered
Which Spanish accent does it use?
Dalia, the narrator in the sample above, is one of several Spanish narrators, and the sample is the best way to judge how she sounds. If you'd rather hear a different voice, choose another Spanish narrator and Lullula will use it on every Spanish page.
Does it work on El País and BBC Mundo?
Yes. They're text pages, so open the article and press play. Lullula reads the article itself rather than the menus and related-story boxes around it.
Can I slow it down for shadowing practice?
Yes. Speed runs from 0.5x to 2x. Skip back a sentence to hear it again, and Lullula remembers where you stopped, so you can come back to a long text later and carry on.
Is it free?
Yes. Listening with your browser's built-in voices is free and unlimited, and the free plan adds 2,000 words a month of premium neural voices like Dalia, with no account needed. If you want more premium listening, Pro is $4.99 a month, or $4.17 a month billed yearly ($49.99 a year).
Does it work on my phone?
Not yet. Lullula is an extension for desktop Chrome, Edge and Firefox; there is no phone app.
Is what I read private?
Lullula doesn't track your browsing. The only thing that leaves your computer is the text you play with a premium voice, which is sent to Lullula's servers to turn into audio. Listening with your browser's built-in voices happens entirely on your machine.
